The second season of Andor saw the rise of budding star, Elizabeth Dulau, who was cast by creator Tony Gilroy in early 2021. Dulau, a recent graduate from London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), played the character Kleya Marki, initially a “sorcerer’s apprentice” to Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael, a part-time antiquities dealer and full-time shadowy leader of the emerging Rebellion.
Season two revealed the tragic backstory of Kleya and Luthen’s relationship. Luthen, a former Imperial Sargeant, experienced a crisis of conscience during a genocidal attack on Kleya’s homeplanet. A young Kleya stowed away on his ship, leading to a partnership that saw them become the surrogate father and daughter of the Rebellion.
In season two, Kleya had a significant moment in the tenth episode, “Make It Stop,” where she had to end Luthen’s life. This pivotal scene was anticipated by Dulau throughout the production. Also revealed in this season was her character’s essential role in passing off key pieces of intelligence regarding the Empire’s top-secret development of Death Star, showing Kleya as a major player in the chain of events leading to the tyranny’s destruction in the original Star Wars.
In a recent spoiler conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Dulau discussed the impact of playing a character who has now become a part of the Star Wars history that dates back to the ‘70s, and her hopes for Kleya’s future in the Rebellion. Dulau also appreciated the opportunity given by Tony Gilroy. She said, “I really didn’t want to screw it up. I really wanted to do justice to this opportunity that he’s given me.”
Meanwhile, Gilroy praised Dulau’s acting skills: “By the time we finished season one, everyone on our whole show was just in awe [of Elizabeth]. We don’t have a moment of bad film on her.” Andor season two is currently streaming on Disney+.
