‘The Penguin’s’ Cristin Milioti Stars in New Indie Horror Thriller, ‘Buddy’

Emmy nominee Cristin Milioti, known for her performance in HBO’s The Penguin, is set to star in a new independent horror thriller, Buddy. The movie, directed by Casper Kelly, co-creator of viral horror comedy Too Many Cooks, is currently being filmed in Ohio. The thriller is a production of BoulderLight Pictures and Low Spark Films. The plot has not been disclosed but is expected to provide a “new experience in horror.”

Fresh from garnering an Emmy nomination for her performance in HBO’s The Penguin, Cristin Milioti is preparing for her next film project, an indie horror thriller named Buddy.

The director’s chair is occupied by Casper Kelly, the mind behind Adult Swim shows like Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell and the horror-comedy viral hit Too Many Cooks. The shooting of the movie commenced this week in Ohio.

The movie is a product of the collaboration between J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, who are producing through their company, BoulderLight Pictures. Amidst a successful year with movies like Companion, Friendship, and the forthcoming horror flick Weapons on their roster, BoulderLight Pictures continues to make its presence felt in the industry.

Pitching in as producers for Low Spark Films are Tyler Davidson and Drew Sykes. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, the production house has notable movies like Emily The Criminal and Take Shelter to its credit, and is also co-financing the movie.

Information about the plot is being closely guarded, though the project has been hinted to offer a “fresh take on horror.” Kelly has co-authored the script with Jamie King, known for her work on the Disney+ family movie, World’s Best.

Collaborating on the production of this feature is Sipur Studios (Bad Boy) and Substance, marking Sipur’s first venture into horror films. Given Kelly’s past work, it seems probable that the movie will defy genre norms.

In The Penguin, Milioti dons the role of Sofia Falcone, the daughter of a late gangster, acting alongside Colin Farrell. On top of the recent Emmy nod, she has bagged a Golden Globe and SAG Award nomination, as well as winning a Critics Choice Award for the best actress in a limited series.

Her past performances include the critically lauded 2020 dark comedy Palm Springs and popular episodes of Black Mirror.
