Honing into America’s current political environment and President Trump’s forceful immigration policies, Gunn described Superman as a ‘story of America ‘ and an allegory of immigration. His movie encapsulates the idea of basic human kindness, a virtue he believes has gone missing in today’s world. Despite the potential backlash from varying political groups, Gunn maintains that the core message of his film is kindness and its importance in the world.

James Gunn’s Upcoming Superman to be an Allegory of Immigration and Human Kindness

– James Gunn, the filmmaker of the anticipated Superman blockbuster, recently discussed the themes of his film, stating it is a story about basic human kindness and the struggle of an immigrant in an unfamiliar land.
– Gunn asserts that his Superman, characterised by unique goodness, is needed in the current mean and divisive socio-political climate.
– The film, set to release on July 11, grapples with morality and how differences in beliefs can strain relationships, embodied in the characters of Superman and Lois Lane.

James Gunn, the filmmaker and co-head of DC Studios, opened up to The Sunday Times about his long-anticipated Superman film. This superhero movie’s themes are especially relevant in light of the current U.S. political climate and President Donald Trump’s strong immigration policies.

“Superman is the story of America,” Gunn articulated, “An immigrant from another land who populated this country, but to me it primarily tells a tale that affirms basic human kindness as a virtue that we seem to have lost.”

Gunn acknowledged that different political factions and regions might interpret Superman in different ways, but he isn’t concerned if the film offends some people.

“Yes, it resonates differently,” Gunn stated. “However, it’s directed towards human kindness and there will inevitably be unkind individuals who find it offensive simply because the film emphasizes kindness. But I pay them no mind.”

The director went on to say that the superhero picture, with David Corenswet starring as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, is politically-focused, “yet on another level it tackles morality.”

“Does one never kill regardless of the situation — a belief Superman holds — or is there a middle ground, as Lois seems to believe?” he asked. “The story really hinges on their relationship and the way conflicting perspectives on fundamental moral beliefs can drive two people apart.”

Gunn’s Superman is focused on a younger Clark Kent, who is struggling to merge his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, alongside maintaining his job as a reporter in Metropolis.

“This Superman appears at a unique moment when faith in others’ goodness seems to be waning,” said the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker regarding the film’s release timing. “I’m telling the story of an innately good individual, which feels necessary today given the proliferation of rudeness that has sprung from influential figures being unkind online.”

He went on to clarify, “I don’t produce films with a goal to reinvent the world, but if this film convinces a handful of people to be a tad nicer, I’d consider myself content.”

Superman is set to be released in theaters on July 11.
