Trailer Roundup #1

I believe any movie can be judged in 30 seconds. So here they are, the verdicts from tonights trailers preceding X-Men 3:

My Super Ex-Girlfriend – Apparently they couldn’t come up with a better title for this, but I guess they have to make sure the target market can remember what movie they’re seeing during that walk from the parking lot to the ticket booth. As dumb as it looks, it also looks like fun. Thumbs up, but I’ll save this one for a date movie.

Nacho Libre – Lucha Libre, good. Jack Black, good. Jared Hess, good. Deep down, though, I don’t feel good. Thumbs down.

Superman Returns – An cornucopia of criss-crossing crystals tells me that this is definitely a sequel to the 80s movies, at least visually. Not a lot of gayness to be seen, save for one brief shot where Luthor comes up behind Supes and jams a long sharp object into him. Thumbs up, but why is there steam in Metropolis?

The Omen – Oh, how cute, Liev Schrieber and Ol’ Flounder Face (a.k.a. Julia Stiles) have a beautful little boy. Unfortunately for them he’s SATAN. Yes, we’ve seen this movie before, but can quicker cuts, CGI, and Rosemary’s Baby’s Mom actually improve this classic? The thumb says no.

SNAKES ON A MOTHERFUCKING PLANE – The marketing folks are now hip to the gag, they’re laughing with us at the idea of snakes on a plane. As a result, this could be the first movie where the vortex of pre-release post-ironic buzz destroys it before it even hits theaters. I don’t care, though. I like snakes. Thumbs up.
