Bourne Supremacy

I recently rented Bourne Identity and thoroughly enjoyed it… so I rented the sequel…(expect spoilers)

And overall, I didn’t care much.  Killing off Lola was a bold move.  But I never really saw them as a couple anyway so I wasn’t incredibly moved.  And as far as the rest of the film goes, it’s already fading fast from my memory.

Here is my major gripe with the flic… I don’t think Greengrass’ style was entirely appropriate for this film.  I love the hand-held verite thing as you all know.  But with action, there has to be a way to use that style without it just becoming a mess.  STOP cutting so fast Mr. Greengrass!!  It’s just easy.  I want to know what is going on. Â

What is the difference between Greengrass’ style and Michael Bay’s style?  Not much.  During any one of these action sequences, I was completely aware that these shots could have been filmed months apart from one another and just edited together to make a time line.  But it doesn’t gel…it doesn’t flow.  The best action films ever show us wide shots, where we can understand the terrain.  Road Warrior, The Hitcher (original), and Children of Men hold long takes and wide shots that really sell the reality of the scene. Â

I wish people wouldn’t praise Greengrass for this type of direction cause it will just lead to more like this.  And the reason I used Julia’s picture for this review is because this is the first time since 10 Things I Hate About You that I didn’t suspect her of being a hermaphrodite.
