  • Agee also opened up about his challenging 2020 and how being cast in Peacemaker provided a much-needed positive turn.
  • He also discusses the evolution of his character, John Economos, in the series and reveals behind-the-scenes details of filming, including a major character recasting in season one and filming a group sex scene for season two.

Peacemaker’s star Steve Agee has been associated with James Gunn since an unexpected encounter back in 2008. This friendship predates Gunn’s well-known roles as co-CEO of DC Studios and the writer-director of productions like Superman (2025), The Suicide Squad (2021) and the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Agee joins Smith (a friend from the Saw movies franchise) during a weekend party hosted by James’ brother, Sean Gunn. Agee’s integration to the Gunn brothers’ circle, including guests like Michael Rooker and Nathan Fillion, happened swiftly thereafter.

Agee’s diverse professional background as a writer, actor, musician, and comedian provides a strong foundation for his synergy with Gunn’s creative group. The famous offer for playing a part in Peacemaker came at the end of a difficult year for Agee, who lost his mother to leukemia.

Agee’s performance as John Economos in The Suicide Squad was not expected to become his defining role. He also worked as the physical performer for King Shark, voiced by Sylvester Stallone, and assumed this character was more likely his future in the DC universe. However, Gunn took Economos’ character and gave him depth in the first series of Peacemaker, culminating in a moving monologue about why he dyes his beard.

When Gunn assumed his role as co-CEO at DC Studios, Agee was among the first to know and encouraged him to accept. The release of the second season of Peacemaker introduces further complexity to Economos’ character. As the only one in his group still employed at ARGUS, he is torn between his friends and his work duties. As Agee explains, this predicament allows Economos to look out for Peacemaker and the rest of the group, as he is one step ahead of ARGUS.

In their recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Agee discusses more about Economos’ role in the second season of Peacemaker, and the experience of shooting an explicit group sex scene included in the season’s premiere and ends with Agee teasing the last three episodes of the next season. He describes them as ‘absolutely insane’ and shares that the common inquiry of whether “the grass is always greener on the other side” is thoroughly explored.
