“The Last of Us” Season 2 Review: A Thrilling Yet Incomplete Journey

HBO’s highly anticipated second season of “The Last of Us” is almost here, and it’s safe to say that fans will be both thrilled and left wanting more. The hit video game adaptation continues to deliver on its signature action and stellar performances, but falls short when tying up loose ends and providing closure. With jaw-dropping action sequences and standout performances from stars Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, “The Last of Us” Season 2 is a must-watch, but it may leave some unsatisfied.

“The Last of Us” Season 2 Review: A Thrilling Yet Incomplete Journey

The second season picks up five years after the events of the first, with Joel and Ellie now living in the mountain community of Jackson, Wyoming. While the time jump has been kind to them, their relationship has suffered and they are barely on speaking terms. However, a crisis soon arises, forcing them to spring into action and embark on a journey that comes at a personal cost. Along the way, they encounter new faces and familiar ones, but not all of them are fully fleshed out.

One of the biggest strengths of “The Last of Us” has always been its character development, and this season is no exception. Pedro Pascal delivers a moving performance as Joel, while Bella Ramsey shines in her portrayal of Ellie. Their chemistry is undeniable and their bond is put to the test as they navigate through a world filled with violence and vengeance. Isabela Merced also leaves a lasting impression as Dina, Ellie’s best friend and love interest, and her chemistry with Ramsey is palpable.

However, not all characters receive the same amount of attention. While Kaitlyn Dever delivers a strong performance as Abby, a soldier seeking vengeance, her character feels underdeveloped. This is also the case for other new characters introduced in Seattle, where our main characters find themselves caught in the middle of a war between two factions. While the action is intense and the worldbuilding is intriguing, the lack of explanation and depth for these new groups leaves the audience feeling disconnected.

Despite its flaws, “The Last of Us” Season 2 still manages to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The action is captivating, the performances are top-notch, and the themes of cycles of violence and vengeance are explored in a thought-provoking way. However, the season’s ending leaves much to be desired as it becomes apparent that many questions will remain unanswered until the next season.

As a standalone season, “The Last of Us” Season 2 may leave some unsatisfied. However, when viewed as part of a larger story, it sets the stage for what could be an epic and fulfilling conclusion. Even so, it’s disappointing that it makes the season on its own a bit lackluster without a real payoff.

While “The Last of Us” Season 2 may not be perfect, it’s still a thrilling and addicting ride that will leave you wanting more. With a strong focus on character development and intense action sequences, it’s a must-watch for fans of the video game and newcomers alike. Just be prepared to have some unanswered questions and a yearning for the next season… whenever that is.

I thought Season 2 had some powerful moments and great performances, but it definitely felt like it ended too soon. Hoping for more closure in the next season.
