Getting hard over this thing….

image

I GOT IT!!!!  And I paid a fortune for it… so I’m ebaying it.  Lemme know if you are interested. wink wink.

For the 60th Anniversary of the Cannes Film Fest, 33 short films
directed by the “best of the best” in world cinema.  When I saw the
list of directors… I splurged. For the most part the short films are
failures BUT still fascinating to watch what the “masters” did we
their three minutes.  For masters…. I wish these guys didn’t go for
the obvious themes: cinema meaning just as much to a blind people,
projection problems, etc etc.

I know I’m a Von Trier devotee…but it can’t be denied that his is
the best.  Just because he does what he does best with it… makes a
mockery of the entire idea, focuses on himself and at the same time,
makes a point.

I just wish Tom Twyker made one of these…. after seeing his short on
“Paris, Je T’aime” and “Perfume” (my review to come soon) …. I’m
thinking Tom can do no wrong.

My brief review of most of the films:

OPEN-AIR CINEMA- Raymond Depardon
(boring…so what, let’s show people watch movies in some Arab country….Big deal!!!)
ONE FINE DAY- Takeshi Kitano
(projection problem skit..not very funny, looks Japanese though)
THREE MINUTES- Theo Angelopoulos
(pretty good… if only Theo had time constraints with his features)
IN THE DARK- Andrei Konchalovsky
(great looking but boring, feels Russian though I must say)
DIARY OF A SPECTATOR – Nanni Moretti
(Cute, but references to shitty movies like Mystic Pizza turned me off)
THE ELECTRIC PRINCESS HOUSE- Hou Hsiao-Hsien
(very nice, somewhat moving, a tribute to cinema before home video)
DARKNESS- Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne
(I expected more from these guys, tried to be moving..doesn’t do much for me)
ANNA- Alejandro González Iñárritu
(Alejandro is a cheese ball… he’s addicted to bad scripts, this guy)
MOVIE NIGHT- Zhang Yimou
(Yimou has banged Zhang Zihi and Li Gong…. he doesn’t have to try anymore)
THE DYBBUK OF HAIFA- Amos Gitai
(Amos is one of the worst narrative directors of all time!!!!  Yes, we
get it…people are dying in Palestine.  Stick to docs you CUNT!!!)
THE LADY BUG- Jane Campion
(Trying to be cute?  ugghhhh)
ARTAUD DOUBLE BILL –Atom Egoyan
(Just like your films, a waste of my time)
THE FOUNDARY- Aki Kaurismäki
(It certainly looks like an Aki film….  pretty good…  one of the
better ones)
UPSURGE –Olivier Assayas
(Nice, about a stalker boyfriend..wish he made it more about cinema though)
47 YEARS LATER- Youssef Chahine
(One of the most embarrassing pieces of crap I’ve ever seen.  Youssef,
I’m so happy I don’t know you cause you seem like a self-centered
ego-maniac..you suck)
IT’S A DREAM- Tsai Ming-Ling
(same old, same old)
OCCUPATIONS- Lars Von Trier
(the best)

FIRST KISS- Gus Van Sant
(not very nice looking….  again wasn’t moved at all)
CINEMA EROTIQUE- Roman Polanski
(little humorous skit..expected more)
NO TRANSLATION NEEDED- Michael Cimino
(my god…further proof that he has lost his fucking mind)
AT THE SUICIDE OF THE LAST JEW IN THE WORLD IN THE LAST CINEMA IN
THE WORLD David Cronenberg
(intriguing but I’m not sure why he focused on the Jew thing)
I TRAVELLED 9000 KM TO GIVE IT TO YOU –Wong Kar Wai
(exactly what you expect)
WHERE IS MY ROMEO? –Abbas Kiarostami
(nice, and at three minutes, Abbas doesn’t have the chance to put you to sleep)
5.557 MILES FROM CANNES WAR IN PEACE –Wim Wenders
(nice idea, interesting stuff)
HAPPY ENDING- Ken Loach
(very Loachian….but set-up is stupid….I laughed though)

Not on the DVD are a second Walter Salles short, Joel and Ethan Coen’s
WORLD CINEMA and David Lynch’s ABSURDA, all delivered to late to be
included.
