“Welcome to Derry” Prequel Series Expands Stephen King’s “It” Universe

HBO Max has given the green light to “Welcome to Derry,” a new series based on Stephen King’s classic horror novel “It,” which promises to expand the terrifying universe of the beloved book and its blockbuster big-screen adaptations.

The project reunites filmmaker siblings Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who directed the successful “It” and “It: Chapter Two” films, with writer Jason Fuchs, who co-wrote the sequel, to craft an all-new take on the haunted town of Derry, Maine. The show will be a prequel to the films, delving deeper into the town’s history and expanding the narrative canvas of King’s epic story.

“As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces,” said the Muschiettis in a statement. “It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humor, humanity and horror.”

The “It” movies were box office smashes, grossing over a billion dollars combined worldwide and captivating audiences with its chilling tale of friends battling a demonic clown and other monstrous manifestations of evil. The novel has been a cultural touchstone for horror fans since its publication in 1986 and remains one of King’s most iconic and beloved works.

“I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara,” said King. “Red balloons all around!”

The new series promises to take fans deeper into the twisted world of Derry, exploring the dark forces that have plagued the town for generations. No casting details have been announced yet, but fans are already speculating who will play the iconic roles of the Losers Club and the malevolent entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
