Parody Lost

I don’t know why I did it, but I recorded and watched this movie. I needed to know. I didn’t laugh once, but that was to be expected. I was, and still am, in shock about how lazy comedy has become in the world of parody. I mean, there’s a scene where a talking beaver (sorry Hugh) comes up to talk to our heroes, and the girl (who has met him before) gets scared, kicks him in the nuts and the beaver goes flying. The beaver then comes back and says, “you met me already” and she says, “yeah, i know.” This movie went on to earn over $80M worldwide. That’s millions and dollars.

The problem I’m faced with is that I find myself judging the human race because of this. I know it’s elitist, but if someone tells me that Epic Movie is a funny movie, then I think they are a lesser being. What’s worse is that clearly these types of phoned-in comedies are big business, so there are lots of people in this world that I judge as less than human. So these types of movies are creating social disharmony within me, and to be a proper person, I have to pretend they don’t exist. I apologize to those I may offend, and please understand if I have no idea what you’re talking about if you bring up a parody movie made post-Scary Movie in the future.

However, these are probably the best scripts to write also, because they’re all clearly a first draft, if not drawn solely from scribbles on cocktail napkins. Kudos to the writers. Despite my self-imposed ignorance of these movies, if given the opportunity, I will do my part to bring pride back to the parody. Not sure I have it in me, but it’s a worthy cause for humanity. I feel we all owe it our long-lost brothers, Zucker, Abrams and Zucker.
