Starship Troopers 3: Marauder Review and Bonus!
I’m a bit surprised by how much I enjoyed, respected and admired Starship Troopers 3: Marauder. I don’t want to mislead you into thinking that it’s a masterpiece, but really it’s all about perspective. I realize I’m in the minority when it comes to this, but if I pay $14, and sit in a theater for 2 hours watching a 80 million dollar crappy movie, I usually feel worse about that then I do some budget direct-to-DVD flick. That said, Starship Troopers 2 really, really sucked (except the nude scene by Kelly Carlson, the hot chick from Nip/Tuck). I hated it so much because it was so incredibly boring. So walking into 3, I had the lowest of expectations but just wanted to see some more bug action good time. I got that and so much more!

What’s interesting about Starship Troopers 3: Marauder is that I honestly feel that if it was a big budget movie, it would have rocked. My theory goes like this, because it’s only a $7 or $8 million dollar movie, there’s less checks in place. The script stays loose and doesn’t get as many passes, the low budget leads to less takes and in some cases, less capable actors, Ed Neumeier, a first time director, gets the gig, and overall, the special effects really suffer. The effects look so cheap and bad, worse than video game cutscenes, but if you get over it, you can get into the movie. I truly feel that if given the same treatment as many major motion pictures, it could have been a wicked sequel and restart of the Starship Troopers franchise.
I realize I’m now positioning this as a movie that’s a lot stronger than it is; most of you will hate it, and I doubt any of you will appreciate it like I do. It’s got SOOO many problems, but it means well and for that, I think it nabbed me. If you want to see low-budget film-making at its best, get on set for Kurt Leitner’s Spring Awakening. But if you can’t swing that, then definitely rent Starship Troopers 3 Marauder on Blu-ray… and if you do, make sure to pop in FRIEND CODE: F3A2GQ and see me in the movie.

At the time, I really couldn’t see how you could make fun of jingoistic war propaganda movies by making a jingoistic war propaganda movie. Events since the original film’s release has made Verhoeven’s commentary on an over the top society at war less satirical and more prescient than anyone expected.
