Warner Bros. Games Restructuring to Enhance Focus on Key Franchises

Warner Bros. Games, a division of Warner Bros. Discovery, is altering its organizational structure to better focus on its prominent IP franchises like Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, DC, and Mortal Kombat. This includes promoting several in-house studio heads and concentrating on providing a robust roadmap for these key franchises’ future games.

Warner Bros. Discovery is undertaking a modification of its games branch, Warner Bros. Games. The focus now shifts to key intellectual property franchises like Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, DC, and Mortal Kombat. Changes in the studio’s management structure accompany this shift.

Yves Lachance, the previous head of Warner Bros. Games Montréal, becomes the senior vice president, now focusing on the Harry Potter and Game of Thrones franchises. Similarly, former NetherRealm Studio head Shaun Himmerick also rises to the position of senior vice president and will oversee the DC and Mortal Kombat franchises. Steven Flenory, the previous head of Warner Bros Games New York studio, also secures a promotion to senior vice president of central tech & services, where he will manage game and publishing technology, customer service, quality assurance, and user research.

Reporting to JB Perette, the CEO of global streaming & games at Warner Bros. Discovery, all three leaders will spearhead operations of their respective departments.

“We house some of the world’s most significant franchises, and it was high time we streamline our team structure to create and execute long-term roadmaps for these franchises. Our objective – to captivate and satisfy Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat and DC games’ fans and players,” said Perrette. He welcomed the new leaders – Yves, Shaun, and Steven – and acknowledged their achievements and leadership, expressing his excitement to work with them to produce the best games possible for their key franchises.

Warner Bros. Discovery is set to bifurcate itself to maximize efficiency and outcomes. The first entity will comprise streaming and studios, led by David Zaslav, and is expected to include the video games studio. The second entity is to be headed by Gunnar Weidenfels to oversee global linear TV networks. Zaslav has prioritized focusing on core franchises within Warner Bros. film and TV studios.

Already having successes with their IP-based games, the reorganization comes at an opportune time. The standout games have been Hogwarts Legacy, slated for release in 2023, and Mortal Kombat – an original game-turned-franchise that extended into films. Additionally, a Game of Thrones-based game, Kingsroad, hit the market recently. The pivot towards focusing on promising franchises and the organizational reshuffle promises renewed growth and development for Warner Bros. Games.
