‘The Backrooms’ Creator to Direct A24 Horror Flick Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor & Renate Reinsve

A24 just signed horror prodigy Kane Parsons to direct The Backrooms, making him the youngest helmer in the studio’s history at just 19 years old. This sci-fi horror feature stars Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World). Production begins this summer, backing Parsons’ viral YouTube series (it’s amassed over 190 million views) with substantial support from A24, Atomic Monster, 21 Laps, and Chernin Entertainment.

Parsons, known as Kane Pixels online, built his reputation creating chilling found footage shorts set in endless fluorescent-office mazes where eerie creatures lurk. He took that creepypasta concept and delivered a slow-burning, atmospheric web series exploring a mysterious organization called Async probing this liminal space. His short films hit big, with the first alone gathering over 66 million views.

Now armed with a full movie budget, Kane can elevate that tension to feature-length scale. The screenplay is handled by Roberto Patino (Westworld), with James Wan and Michael Clear producing under Atomic Monster, alongside Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps and Peter Chernin’s team. A24’s reputation for bold horror makes it a perfect creative home.

From our geeky perspective this is pure alt-horror alchemy. Think of it as found footage meets Cube in a fluorescent labyrinth, with top-tier acting from Ejiofor and Reinsve. We expect a deeply unsettling vision, a haunting exploration of emptiness, paranoia, and that uncanny fear of the familiar turned wrong.
