THE ROAD TO GUANTANAMO

Michael Winterbottom is trying to set a record or something. He turns
out two films a year. And besides 9 Songs, which I think is a
pathetic piece of nothing, all of his projects are thought provoking,
timely, technical achievements..usually lacking a little on an
emotional level but still worthy of some sort of praise.

I have to recommend seeing this film in the theaters for a couple of reasons:

1) sends a message to the theater chains and the studios that there
are intelligent audiences out there who are interested in something
other than popcorn fare and are willing to pay for it.

2) This covers a story that got much deserved attention in the UK but
of course was barely mentioned over here. A story of extreme abuse of
power by our government. And we should show that we care and want to
know about these things. (THE ROAD TO GUANTANAMO covers the story of
the Tipton Three, three Pakistani-British kids, who because of some
bad luck and bad decisions wound up spending 4 years of their life,
prisoners of the U.S. government at Guantanamo Bay.)

3) Winterbottom makes digital video features like nobody else. He
fully embraces the video look and uses color correction and post
effects to take it to a whole new level. It’s dirty and raw yet
polished and sweet eye candy at the same time. It’s not video trying
to look like film..it’s a new, unique look that I find just as
beautiful as the most lushly shot celluloid.
