FEAST is a banquet for horror fans!

First off, I’m sure Jason will hate it. Second, thanks to Burnt Leader for his timely review (he saw it last Friday night in the theater, I saw it on DVD two nights ago… F him). But more importantly, FEAST!

So this is a movie made for horror fans. It’s not a great movie, not by a long shot, but it’s an entertaining one. You’ll never be bored, you’ll definitely like if not love the characters, and there will certainly be some surprises. First-time director, John Gulager, the social retard from Project Greenlight Part Tres has a great eye and it’s too bad he couldn’t talk his way out of a paper bag to let the suits see his vision. I can only imagine what he’d do with a $30M dollar flick, and I mean that literally because no one will ever let him direct again.

The beauty of FEAST is not its story, which is basically everyone trying to survive a night in a bar under siege by monsters, but its characters. The characters are all introduced in a unique way, and while it may seem gratuitous (and is), it fits perfectly with the film and helps set some expectations (false and otherwise) that completely set the mood for the rest of the movie. You never really get to know what the monsters motivation is (where they come from? what they are? etc.) and it’s definitely NOT what some trailers showcase, but in the end, you get some good glimpses and there’s some uniqueness to them. They’re kind of Alien meets Leatherface, and I know that’s meaningless so I’ll stop making comparisons.

I don’t want to spoil any of the surprises, except that Gulager was right in that Navi was not right for the part she was cast in, but if you’re a horror movie fan, you definitely want to give this one a whirl. The DVD itself has some good extras, showcasing some of the pick-up scenes and commentary on that, deleted scenes which include an alternate ending that I think I’m glad they cut, and feature commentary that I’ve yet to listen to.

It’s sad that this film seems to be successful, though probably not profitable, despite the failure of the Greenlight series. I’m also hoping that third season comes out soon so I can see some of the production from a different angle. So keep your eyes peeled for FEAST when it hits DVD in October.
