Godzilla Minus Zero Is Takashi Yamazaki’s Next Film

The kaiju legend Godzilla Minus Zero has officially been set in motion. Studio Toho Studios announced that writer-director Takashi Yamazaki will helm the next film in the franchise, now officially titled Godzilla Minus Zero. The reveal occurred during the 2025 “Godzilla Day” celebration in Tokyo.

Godzilla Minus Zero Is Takashi Yamazaki’s Next Film

This announcement comes on the heels of the 2023 film Godzilla Minus One, which received widespread recognition including an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The new title signals the next chapter of the franchise as Toho continues to expand the monster’s cinematic legacy.

Yamazaki is confirmed to return in multiple roles, serving as writer, director and visual-effects supervisor for Godzilla Minus Zero. Toho has not yet released detailed plot information or a full cast list. Principal photography is currently listed as complete or nearing completion, with a targeted worldwide release set for late 2026. The film carries the numeric designation “-0.0,” advancing the storyline from the previous “-1.0” title.

The 2023 predecessor, Godzilla Minus One, was directed by Yamazaki and helped revitalize the franchise’s global presence. It set records as one of the highest-grossing Japanese films in the U.S. and won the franchise’s first ever Academy Award nomination and win for visual effects. Godzilla Minus Zero is therefore highly anticipated as a direct follow-up, though Toho has not specified whether it will expand the story from the earlier film or explore a new angle within the Godzilla universe.

Production sources note that Yamazaki personally illustrated the film’s new logo. Toho is collaborating with VFX house Shirogumi on visual-effects work. The studio’s international division has described the project as “positioned not just as a sequel but as a statement,” indicating elevated ambitions for the next chapter. While specific filming locations have not been officially confirmed, recruitment notices suggest involvement of extras in Japan and overseas late in 2025.

The numeric progression from Minus One to Minus Zero invites speculation about thematic direction though no official storyline has been published. Yamazaki is known for combining historical context, human drama and creature spectacle, as he did in the prior film. Fans can expect a mix of grounded character work and large-scale monster action, consistent with the creative tone established in previous installments.
