LEGO’s 2,912-Piece Set Inspired by ’80s Classic The Goonies

– The Lego company has released a 2,912-piece set based on the iconic ’80s film “The Goonies”, featuring a model of the pirate ship and other memorable scenes from the film. The set includes 12 minifigures of the main characters, including brand-new elements for Sloth and Mama Fratelli, and will be available from November 1.
– The set was proposed by fan designer, Vaggelis Ntezes, through Lego’s Ideas division, which allows fan-submitted designs to be voted into production. Buyers in November will also receive a bonus 179-piece Goonies set recreating the attic scene where the kids discover the treasure map.
– “The Goonies” has maintained its popularity over the years, consistently ranking highly on streaming service HBO Max and inspiring a tourism scene in Astoria, Oregon, where the film was set. A sequel to the movie is currently being developed by Warner Bros.

The iconic brick-based toy giant, Lego, disclosed the design of a new 2,912-piece building set inspired by The Goonies, the hit 1980s adventure film directed by Richard Donner and backed by Steven Spielberg.

The Lego set builds into a diorama centred around the pirate ship from the movie. It takes one on a tour of the film, featuring the various rooms portrayed. This includes brick constructs of iconic scenes, from the Fratellis’ hideout to perilous boulder traps to the bone organ and One-Eyed Willy’s treasure chamber.

The building kit will offer 12 mini characters, such as Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, Andy, and Data. According to Lego, new elements were intentionally crafted for Sloth’s pirate hat and bandana, alongside Mama Fratelli’s distinctive hair and beret. The finished set will measure 18 cm in width, 62 cm in length, and 36 cm in height.

The announcement of the new Lego set was introduced with Ke Huy Quan, the Oscar winner who played Data, in a mini-film. Quan narrates the film, exploring the set and revealing its hidden surprises.

The Goonies Lego set originates from the Lego Ideas segment, which offers fans the chance to propose their own dream Lego sets. They then stand to be made by the company through a voting process. This intricate Goonies Lego set was proposed by 3D artist and enthusiast, Vaggelis Ntezes from Greece, also known by his Lego Ideas username, Delusion Brick.

“This set design is an embodiment of my childhood nostalgia – reminiscing my ’80s childhood, fiddling with Lego Pirates sets while watching The Goonies,” Ntezes expressed in Lego’s announcement. He wanted to fashion a set that offers not only playability but also serving as a display piece, essentially putting together the legendary Inferno with the movie’s cave system and traps.

The Goonies set will be released via the Lego’s early access program from Nov. 1 and will be available in stores from Nov. 4, priced at $309.99.

Additionally, buyers who purchase the set within November will be gifted an additional Goonies set: LEGO Ideas The Goonies: The Walsh Attic. This set, with 179 pieces, depicts the scene where the kids discover the treasure map in the Walsh’s family attic. It comes with minifigures of Irving and Irene Walsh, the parents.

Goonies, a timeless 80s movie classic has continued to captivate audiences across generations with its mix of cheeky yet innocent allure. Penned by Christopher Columbus and directed by Donner, already an experienced Hollywood director, the narrative centres on a group of local misfits in Astoria, Oregon who undertake the task of finding a lost pirate treasure to rescue their homes.

The movie features the young Brolin in his debut and stars Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, Kerri Green and Quan as the children while Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, and Joe Pantoliano play the amateurish criminal family, the Fratellis. John Matuszak depicted the estranged family member known simply as Sloth.

The movie continues to be well-received on HBO Max, and Warners Bros. Discovery (the releasing company back in 1985) is currently engaged in developing a sequel.

This set looks amazing! The Goonies was one of my favorite movies growing up, and seeing it brought to life in LEGO form is just so cool. Definitely thinking about picking this one up.
