Illumination and Nintendo have officially named the forthcoming Super Mario Bros. 2 animated film, as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Continuing the aptly voiced ensemble cast from the primary installation, Chris Pratt reprises his role as Mario, alongside fellow cast members Anya Taylor-Joy starring as Princess Peach, Charlie Day voicing Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Further cast members shall be introduced in the future.
Previously, it had been declared that Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic would be supporting the sequel’s direction—having been directors of the first Super Mario Bros. Movie that premiered in 2023. The subsequent pillar from the Super Mario Bros series, set to be distributed by Universal Pictures, is scheduled for release on April 3, 2026 throughout the U.S. and other global markets. Meanwhile, the animated film will premiere on April 24, 2026, in Japan, followed by releases in select territories during that particular month.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie serves as the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a film that surpassed $1.3 billion in worldwide earnings. The original Super Mario Bros. Movie provided the background story of Mario (Chris Pratt) alongside his younger sibling Luigi (Charlie Day) as they start their journey as plumbers in Brooklyn, only to be transported to the Mushroom Kingdom through an enigmatic pipe. The rest of the cast included Keegan Michael-Key, Jack Black, Sebastian Maniscalco, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
Both the first super successful 2023 film and the sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, were produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto. Animation co-directors Horvath and Jelenic and their animation team have already initiated the process of storyboarding scenes and pioneering designs for new environments. Matthew Fogel, the screenwriter of the first movie, is on the team again. In addition, composer Brian Tyler is on board to orchestrate the score.

Super Mario Galaxy was one of my favorite games growing up, so hearing about a Super Mario Bros. sequel coming in 2026 is super exciting. Can’t wait to see what new worlds they come up with.
