Guillermo del Toro, fresh from the premiere of his latest film ‘Frankenstein’ at the Venice Film Festival, is set to be honoured with a 12-movie retrospective by Beyond Fest, the largest genre film festival in the US. The festival, in collaboration with American Cinematheque, will showcase del Toro’s works over three decades, featuring new restorations, director’s cuts, and rare 35mm screenings. The event titled Está Vivo: The Gods and Monsters of Guillermo del Toro, is set to run from Sept. 23 to Oct. 8.

– Esteemed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is set to receive a 12-movie retrospective at Beyond Fest, the largest genre film festival in the US, celebrating his three decades of work in the film industry.
– The event, named Está Vivo: The Gods and Monsters of Guillermo del Toro, will showcase new restorations and director’s cuts from his career, from his debut with Cronos to his most recent work, Nightmare Alley; it runs from September 23 to October 8.
– Del Toro will also share personal stories from his career through specially curated programming blocks themed around monsters, humanity, and imagination; viewings will occur at The Egyptian in Hollywood and at Los Feliz 3 with a selection of his films.


Guillermo del Toro, the prolific filmmaker, is being celebrated at Beyond Fest, following his recent premiere at the Venice Film Festival. His latest surreal creation, Frankenstein, is included in a retrospective 12-movie showcase. This exhibit will cover his 30-year career in creating unique, vivid, and often unnerving fantasies for the big screen.

The retrospective, called Está Vivo: The Gods and Monsters of Guillermo del Toro, was organized by Beyond Fest in collaboration with the American Cinematheque. It will include new restorations, exclusive director cuts, and seldom-seen 35mm screenings of del Toro’s works, taking viewers from his beginnings with Cronos to his latest release, Nightmare Alley. This year’s festival will take place from September 23 to October 8.

“Guillermo del Toro’s films have undeniably inspired filmmakers and audience’s generations,” stated Beyond Fest’s Evrim Ersoy, Head of Programming, “Celebrating his artistic contributions at this level truly acknowledges his role as a creative juggernaut and a devoted advocate for Cinema.” Del Toro will be present at the festival to partake in four distinct programming blocks he has personally curated, where he will share captivating tales from his filmmaking journey.

The festival will launch with In the Mood for Love, a triple-film exploration of del Toro’s special touch of combining beauty and gore. Featured films will include Crimson Peak, Oscar-winning piece The Shape of Water, and a fresh rendition of Nightmare Alley: Vision in Darkness and Light, with a subsequent question-and-answer session with del Toro after The Shape of Water.

From Sketch to Screen delves into the era where del Toro directed comic book films, including special screenings of Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Blade II. The creator will be present for a pre-screening discussion for Hellboy.

The Early Years section will showcase del Toro’s initial films, which include the theatrical premiere of a 4K restoration of his first film, Cronos, the L.A premiere of the 4K restoration of The Devil’s Backbone and a director’s cut of his first studio feature, Mimic, which will be followed by a Q&A session.

Meanwhile, his 2006 fantasy, Pan’s Labyrinth, which regularly features in acclaimed film listings, will be presented in its own category, Revolution, and a pre-screening Q&A will be held. All the above mentioned films will be screened at The Egyptian in Hollywood.

Del Toro’s successful monster film Pacific Rim and his distinguished stop-motion animation Oscar winner, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, will be given special screenings at the Los Feliz 3.

    Guillermo del Toro’s work has always meant a lot to me, so seeing a full retrospective like this feels special. It’s amazing to look back and realize how many of his films have stuck with me over the years.
