Warner Bros Reschedules ‘Mortal Kombat II’ for Summer 2026 Release

– Warner Bros has rescheduled the release date of its forthcoming film, Mortal Kombat II, from October 2024 to May 15, 2026, choosing to launch as part of next year’s summer season.
– Directed by Simon McQuoid, the sequel to the 2021 reboot of the Mortal Kombat film franchise boasts a star-studded cast including Karl Urban and is based on the popular video game series.
– The first Mortal Kombat II trailer, which debuted last month, teased “amazing fights, epic battles and a few fatalities” while implying a self-referential tone with Urban’s character.

Mortal Kombat II, according to Warner Bros, has been rescheduled for theater release on May 15, 2026. The change comes after initial plans to debut the Simon McQuoid directorial in two months on October 24. The revised schedule allows the film to kickstart the summer season of next year, helping it evade competition from an array of releases this October. It’s a move that aligns with the pattern set by Sony’s Final Destination: Bloodlines, which saw a victorious run in a similar May slot earlier this year.

Handling the production, New Line has rooted the film in an iconic video game franchise dating back to the 1990s. The movie features a star-studded ensemble including Karl Urban as Johnny Cage. Other cast members include Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada.

In Mortal Kombat II, movie-goers will witness a group of unlikely heroes rising to the occasion to protect Earth from the malignant forces of Outworld. This is a follow-up on the return of the film franchise, the 2021’s Mortal Kombat, which is a reboot of the inaugural 1995 movie.

Scripted by Jeremy Slater, the narrative is derived from the video game brainchild of Ed Boon and John Tobias. The production crew comprises McQuoid, Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich and E. Bennett Walsh.

Richard Brenner, the Chief of New Line, had unveiled the first snippets of the film at CinemaCon in April. Beckoning audiences to brace themselves, the executive revealed they can anticipate jaw-dropping fights, grand conflicts, and a couple of fatalities.

The premier trailer of Mortal Kombat II was released online just last month. It featured a highlight scene where Urban’s character, known for his acting skills, was barraged with a fan’s request for a reboot of his famous series.

In the sneak peek, with a touch of self-deprecating humor, Urban responds, “Nobody wants that. That went out of fashion in the ’90s.”

Looking forward to this! The first one was fun, so hoping the sequel brings even more action. Summer 2026 feels far away though.
