‘Doctor Who’s Matt Smith to Make Star Wars Debut in Shawn Levy’s ‘Starfighter’

Matt Smith, known for his roles in Doctor Who and House of the Dragon, is now set to make his Star Wars debut. After nearly making an appearance in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, Smith will finally join the Star Wars galaxy in Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter.

The former Doctor Who and current House of the Dragon star Matt Smith is finally getting his turn at Star Wars. After being considered for a role in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, he has now been confirmed to be a part of Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter.

The new role is one among many antagonistic parts in Starfighter, as sources have revealed. The female villainous character, which was previously linked to Mikey Madison before going to Mia Goth, is yet to be announced. Ryan Gosling is the protagonist in Starfighter scheduled for release on May 28, 2027.

Back in 2018, there were speculations that Smith would be a part of the ninth Star Wars film, which however failed to materialize. In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Smith was asked about the rumor that he was supposed to play a young Palpatine. Smith chose not to respond to it. As it turned out, the original Palpatine actor Ian McDiarmid returned for the part.

Despite the setback, Smith expressed his enthusiasm about the missed Star Wars opportunity, calling it a ‘groovy’ concept and character. He said, “It was a pretty groovy thing, it was a really groovy part and concept. It was a big thing, it was a big story detail, a transformative Star Wars story detail, and it never got quite over the line.”
