– Mark Ruffalo will reprise his role as The Hulk and Michael Mando will return as Scorpion in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, joining main lead Tom Holland.
– The movie, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, is due to start filming this month in England and is set to release on July 31, 2026.
– Jon Bernthal will also join the cast, bringing his character Punisher to the big screen for the first time since 2008’s Punisher: War Zone.
The cast of Spider-Man’s sequel, Brand New Day, shaping up under Sony/Marvel, is set to include a significant addition. Tom Holland will share the screen with returning Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) actor Mark Ruffalo, widely recognized for his role as Bruce Banner or The Hulk. The decision to bring back Ruffalo’s character comes 14 years after his first appearance in The Avengers, marking a long-anticipated development confirmed as the script finalizes and production prepares to start this month in England.
Moreover, Spider-Man: Homecoming villain, the Scorpion, played by Michael Mando renowned for Better Call Saul, will also make a comeback. Mando’s re-entry further cements the continuity from the 2017 film that kicked off the Spider-Man series featuring Holland.
Throughout the Spider-Man movies, Holland’s character has shared significant screen time with other accomplished actors portraying pivotal roles. Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L Jackson, and Benedict Cumberbatch starred as Iron Man, Nick Fury, and Doctor Strange respectively in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. Echoing the classic Marvel comic Marvel Team-Up, these alliances allowed Spider-Man to partner with different heroes on each adventure.
However, Brand New Day is upping the ante by introducing Jon Bernthal to reprise the role of the Punisher. This marks a debut for the character on the big screen of the MCU and its first movie appearance since the 2008 Punisher: War Zone film, where Ray Stevenson took up the role.
While specific plot elements are being kept under wraps, you can expect a typical Marvel showdown. Spider-Man, Punisher, and Hulk will likely face each other, only to join forces against the true adversaries.
Both Sony and Marvel remain tight-lipped regarding any further details.
The movie, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and penned by habitual Spider-Man writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, is all set for a July 31, 2026 release.
Ruffalo is no stranger to Marvel projects. He’s had roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. His most recent appearance was in Disney+’s TV series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, along with a cameo in Cretton’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Mando, known for his character Nacho Varga, a complex drug dealer from Better Call Saul, had also been part of the acclaimed sci-fi series Orphan Black.
Interesting casting choice! Curious to see how Mark Ruffalo fits into the Spider-Man world alongside Tom Holland.
