Save the date, as the iconic phrase “May the Force be with you” will resonate in theaters once more.

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, the initial chapter of the epic trilogy and globally-adored franchise, is slated to make a grand re-entry to theaters, coalescing seamlessly with the monumental event – its 50th anniversary. Lucasfilm’s current custodian, Disney, has verified an official theatrical re-release for April 30, 2027.

A New Hope premiered for the first time in theaters on May 25, 1977, showcasing standout performances from Mark Hamill, who portrayed Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford, seen as Han Solo, and the beloved late Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. The film also signaled the debut of Darth Vader, arguably one of the most recognized villains ever, with David Prowse as the corporeal embodiment and James Earl Jones lending his voice.

The acclaimed franchise, conceived by George Lucas, continued to develop throughout the early 2000s with earlier era films featuring Natalie Portman, Hayden Christensen, and Ewan McGregor. The sequel series began its journey with the 2015 film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which highlighted the talent of Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, including a host of spinoffs and television series.

In a conversation last year at Cannes, Lucas shared his thoughts about his original ideas for Star Wars becoming somewhat obscured after the 2012 Disney acquisition. A few significant missteps in box office performance, most notably 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, are evident.

Lucas stated that he was the one with the true understanding of Star Wars and its expansive universe. “The Force, for example, nobody understood the Force,” Lucas asserted. “When they initiated other films after I sold the company, many of the concepts inherent in the original seemed to have gotten lost. However, that is the nature of the transaction. Once you relinquish it, it’s no longer yours.”

Nonetheless, one eagerly awaited upcoming installment within the franchise is Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, starring the accomplished Ryan Gosling. This film is also predicted to grace theaters in 2027, with a set release date of May 28 of that year.

Hard to believe it’s been 50 years. Definitely going to see it on the big screen again, such a classic.
