Renowned Hollywood legend Mel Brooks, set to turn 99 this month, will officially reprise his role as Yogurt in an untitled Space Balls sequel, slated for a theatrical release in 2027 by Amazon MGM Studios. This sequel to his 1987 hit comedy, which took playful jabs at Star Wars and other films from that era, will also see Brooks don his director’s hat once again. Fans eagerly await the return of this beloved movie mystifier, who often used his characters as satirical caricatures of popular characters, like Yogurt mirroring Yoda.
– Hollywood icon Mel Brooks is set to star in an unnamed Space Balls sequel, scheduled for release in 2027 by Amazon MGM Studios, where he will reprise his role as Yogurt.
– Brooks’ last notable big-screen appearance was in 2005, and the Space Balls sequel, described as ‘A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two’ but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film, has been under development for several years, with co-producers including Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, and Josh Gad.
– The original Space Balls was released in 1987 and while not immediately a hit, it has since garnered a cult following; further details about the sequel are currently being kept undisclosed.
Renowned Hollywood star Mel Brooks is scheduled to mark his 99th birthday later in the month. In celebration, it was confirmed on Thursday that he is slated to feature in a sequel to the movie Space Balls, which is presently untitled. Amazon MGM Studios is expected to release the film in 2027.
Brooks will once again play the character Yogurt in the sequel. His role in the 1987 cult-classic comedy, a parody on Star Wars and its contemporaries, was similar to a comical Yoda. Besides directing and co-writing the original film, Brooks doubled up as the inept President Skroob.
For the sequel, directorship lies in the hands of Josh Greenbaum, while the script is penned by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez and Josh Gad. Gad is also expected to land a role in the film though Amazon remains tight-lipped about additional casting.

The last prominent movie role undertaken by Brooks, barring voiceovers, was in 2005’s The Producers. The film was the silver screen adaptation of Broadway’s successful musical, The Producers, based originally on Brooks’ 1967 film with the same title. Brooks’ directorial and writing portfolio includes classic comedies like Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, and Blazing Saddles. Among his many accolades, Brooks is an EGOT.
As of now, details about the new Spaceballs movie’s plot are not disclosed. However, in a humorous twist, Amazon MGM’s press release described the film as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two’ but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”
Amazon MGM, looking to establish a stronghold in the theatre domain, will announce the exact release date in due course.
Back in 1987, Spaceballs premiered by MGM. It followed Star Wars, the definitive science fiction classic, by a decade. Its cast featured Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, and Joan Rivers who voiced a C-3PO spoof. The movie did not receive universal acclaim, but over time, it garnered a cult following. Today, Spaceballs is among Brooks’ iconic films.
In 2024, Gad hinted at the sequel’s development with an ambiguous Instagram post, showcasing parts of the script’s cover page.
He expressed his excitement, saying that working on the project was like “heaven on Earth and many other planets as well.”
