Peter Sohn, the creatives behind Elemental and The Good Dinosaur, is set to direct the third installment of the successful Incredibles series. The previous two films, directed and written by Brad Bird, made a whopping $1.8 billion combined. Bird, currently penning the screenplay for Incredibles 3, will co-produce with Dana Murray. The franchise took a 14-year hiatus before announcing its return during the D23 Expo event in 2024. It appears Bird’s busy schedule is the reason behind his stepping down as director for the third film.

Pixar is changing gears for the third instalment of the Incredibles, appointing Peter Sohn as the director. Known for his work on ‘Elemental’ and ‘The Good Dinosaur’, Sohn will be taking the helm of this highly acclaimed and commercially prosperous animation series.

Brad Bird, the creator and director of the first two films, has contributed significantly to the Incredibles franchise, with films grossing collectively over $1.8 billion worldwide. Currently engaged in script-writing for the third film, Bird will also act as a producer, alongside Dana Murray, known for her Oscar-winning production ‘Soul’.

The central plot revolves around the Parr family – Bob and Helen Parr, voiced by actors Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter. The Parr family, secretly possessing superpowers, lives a mundane suburban life with their three kids in compliance with a fresh government mandate. Samuel L. Jackson and Sarah Vowell also contribute their voices to the primary cast.

The original ‘Incredibles’ film debuted in 2004, claiming an Oscar for Best Animated Film the next year. The follow-up, ‘Incredibles 2’, was released 14 years later, amassing a massive $1.24 billion worldwide. The official announcement of a third film was made by Disney at the D23 Expo event in August 2024, where Bird was revealed to be ‘developing’ the project. The extent of Bird’s involvement was not disclosed at the event. Bird’s commitment to pre-production work on Skydance’s ‘Ray Gunn’ is speculated to be the reason for not directing the forthcoming installment.

Sohn and Bird have a robust collaborative relationship, with Sohn having been involved in all of Bird’s animated projects, like ‘The Incredibles’ and ‘Incredibles 2’, till his recent movie ‘Ray Gunn’. Bird has been a guiding influence on Sohn, who was elected to lead the Incredibles project by Bird himself and Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter. As a distinguished figure in the Pixar community, apart from his directorial ventures, Sohn has also lent his voice to characters in multiple Pixar films, such as ‘Ratatouille’, ‘Monsters University’ and ‘Lightyear’. Sohn’s work, ‘Elemental’, was also nominated for the Best Animation Feature Oscar last year.
