Blumhouse has confirmed that a sequel to the 2019 psychological horror movie, Ma, is in the works. The announcement came during the company’s business of fear event with Octavia Spencer expected to reprise her role.

In Ma, Spencer delivered a mesmerizing performance as Sue Ann, a solitary woman who forms a rapport with a group of teenagers, letting them use her basement for get-togethers. The narrative takes a menacing turn when Sue Ann sets a series of stringent house rules, which notably included forbidding the teens from going upstairs.

Ma, which grossed $60 million at the box office, was not just a commercial success but also bore a cultural resonance. A part of its allure for the production company has been the extensive set of memes it spawned. These memes served as an index of the movie’s significant presence in popular culture.

“Since its release, Ma has emerged as a cultural sensation, thanks to the warm reception it received from fans and Octavia’s unforgettable portrayal of Ma. A catchphrase from the film, where Ma insists ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ has resonated with the viewers and it’s exciting that Octavia will be back for more,” said Jason Blum, Founder/CEO of Blumhouse.

As of now, there have been no disclosures regarding the sequel’s filmmaker or writer. The original movie was directed by Tate Taylor from a script penned by Scotty Landes.

Spencer, widely acclaimed for her role as Sue Ann in Ma, is a distinguished actress with an Academy award to her credit for The Help. She also received nominations for her stellar performances in Hidden Figures and The Shape of Water.

I didn’t expect a sequel to ‘Ma’, but I’m definitely curious to see where they take the story. Octavia Spencer was intense in the first one.
