– ‘Andor’ creator Tony Gilroy explains that he chose not to bring back characters Kino Loy and Kerri in the second season to preserve the impact of dramatic moments from the first season and keep the mystery alive.
– Gilroy believes Cassian’s missing sister adds more to the narrative as an absence, contributing to Cassian’s compulsion to save people as a way to fill the void in his life.
– The fate of other key characters and storylines, including Dedra, Bix, and Mon Mothma’s daughter, were also discussed in Gilroy’s interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Following the conclusion of the Andor series on Disney+, the show’s creator, Tony Gilroy, clarifies the reasons for the absence of a few characters in the second season.

In a comprehensive discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Gilroy explained why Andy Serkis’ loved character Kino Loy, who played a critical role in the Narkina 5 Imperial prison uprising, along with Cassian Andor’s (Diego Luna) unseen sister Kerri, were not featured in the recent season.

Gilroy in response clarified, “Andy really stole the show. I’m unsure how to top what we managed to achieve, and trying to do so would just diminish that remarkable moment. Despite the fact that many speculated whether we could reintroduce Andy, I wasn’t really keen on orchestrating such contrived circumstances.”

Gilroy was referencing the scene where Loy informs Cassian, “I can’t swim” following their prison break from an aquatic island jail. Loy, surrounded by other escaped convicts, enters the water leaving his fate unresolved.

Regarding the character of Cassian’s sister, she became a key figure right from the first season, as Cassian embarked on a mission to locate her on Morlana One. This mission put him in a situation where he had to eliminate two Imperial Security Bureau officials, hence setting the tone for subsequent events on the show. She also gets screen time during various flashbacks in the initial season.

“Gilroy added, “[Kino Loy] and the sister share a common curiosity among viewers about their possible return. As for the sister, she intrigues me more as an element of absence. Her nonappearance has a deeper impact on Cassian’s character. It ignites in him the urge to save everyone, a drive born from the void in his life. I didn’t feel the necessity to fill that void.”

The complete interview also covers insights into another character, Dedra’s ironic fate, Bix’s unexpected pregnancy, and the ambiguity surrounding the future of yet another character — Mon Mothma’s daughter.
