Ryan Reynolds, after insisting he did not see another solo Deadpool movie in his future, is now discreetly planning his return to the character. He is exploring ideas for a Deadpool movie featuring X-Men characters, but not as the lead of a solo movie. Along with developing various treatments for an ensemble film, Reynolds is also continuing to script the Paramount comedy ‘Boy Band’. However, it should be noted that any potential film with Deadpool and the X-Men is separate from a potential X-Men movie being penned by ‘Hunger Games’ writer Michael Lesslie for Marvel Studios.

About nine months following the great reception of Deadpool & Wolverine, breaking records as the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, Reynolds is meticulously mapping out his return to the character. However, keeping true to his word, he will not be starring as the lead in a solo project.

Hints suggest that Reynolds is considering concepts for a Deadpool film that would incorporate characters from X-Men and is also persistently working on the script for the Paramount comedy Boy Band, after dedicating much of this year to screenwriting before shifting his focus to other responsibilities.

Reynolds is currently considering different storylines for a film that would revolve around a small group of three to four X-Men characters with Deadpool making appearances, perhaps in a supporting role. Reynolds is thought to be of the opinion that limiting Deadpool’s role might pave the way for unexpected and novel use of the X-Men characters. He has always been straightforward about every Deadpool film needing a convincing reason for its existence, and it’s conceivable that this idea could be the needed impetus.

This potential film is entirely separate from a prospective X-Men film planned by Michael Lesslie, the writer of Hunger Games, for Marvel Studios.

At this early stage, it is unclear which X-Men characters Reynolds is considering and discussions about potential cast members such as Cynthia Erivo, Oscar-nominated star of Wicked, vocal about her interest in playing the role of Storm in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), are merely speculative. Any such casting decisions would rest ultimately with Marvel .

Reynolds has featured numerous X-Men characters in his previous Deadpool & Wolverine films, which includes fascinating villains like Sabertooth and Pyro. Continuing this trend, he brought back Hugh Jackman from retirement as Wolverine for a cameo. He also included Channing Tatum in his Deadpool & Wolverine film who was previously in consideration to star in the cancelled Gambit movie.

Besides Deadpool, Reynolds is also working on re-writing the script for Boy Band, a film revolving around aging boy band members. A significant change in Reynolds’ career, this shift towards writing and producing doesn’t mean he isn’t going to act anymore as he will be starring in this Paramount film.

In a previous interview with THR, Reynolds shared his passion for storytelling over acting and his belief that Deadpool could coexist in the same universe as the X-Men and the Avengers. However, he also believes Deadpool’s acceptance into the Avengers or X-Men could signal the end of his journey. Similar sentiments were expressed during the “Time 100 Summit” where he said “If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we’re at the end.” implying that the success Deadpool strived for would signify the end of his character growth.
