Joseph Kosinski, the mastermind behind the lucrative Top Gun: Maverick, is planning a move to Miami. According to insider sources as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the successful filmmaker is set to direct a Universal Miami Vice film.

The movie script is being composed by Dan Gilroy, the accomplished filmmaker known for Nightcrawler, who is working from a pre-existing draft written by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter, Eric Warren Singer. Other contributors include Dylan Clark, the producer of The Batman, who is serving as a producer through his firm, Dylan Clark Productions, and Kosinski, who is contributing his production expertise through Monolith.

Originating as a groundbreaking television series from creator Anthony Yerkovich, Miami Vice propelled actors Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas into the spotlight as two fashion-forward undercover Miami police officers. Michael Mann, the executive producer, discussed how its innovative approach changed the landscape of television in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The successful series ran from 1984 to 1990 on NBC and was eventually adapted into a feature film in 2006, directed by Mann, starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, and earning a worldwide total of $163.7 million.

However, the Miami Vice project will not be Kosinskiโ€™s next endeavor due to his loaded professional agenda, which includes an intriguing UFO conspiracy thriller that got picked up by Apple in a competitive bid in March. His upcoming project is the Brad Pitt racing drama, F1, set to release in June.

Following the success of Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski has become a sought-after figure in the film industry, having previously directed movies like Oblivion and Tron: Legacy. Dan Gilroyโ€™s notable works include The Bourne Legacy and brother Tony Gilroyโ€™s Andor, while Dylan Clark is widely recognized for his contribution to Matt Reevesโ€™ Planet of the Apes movies and Kosinskiโ€™s own Oblivion.
