Starring Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King and Chase Sui Wonders, the reimagined I Know What You Did Last Summer also sees Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. return to their roles from the inaugural film and its 1998 sequel.

The narrative explores the perilous aftermath of a tragic car accident involving a group of five friends who vow to keep their role in the incident a secret. Their story intersects with two survivors from the infamous 1997 Southport Massacre.

Violence in Southport is not unprecedented, Prinze informs viewers in the trailer. At a later stage in the trailer, Hewitt questions the motives behind the residents being marked for reprisal. “I just have one question,” she asks sharply, “What did you do last summer?”

Robinson took on directing duties for the film, working from a screenplay she co-wrote with Sam Lansky, following an original draft by Leah McKendrick. Neal Moritz, a producer on the original movie, returns for the modern revival.

The original I Know What You Did Last Summer graced movie theater screens on Oct. 17, 1997. The cast list boasted star power such as Hewitt, Prinze, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe. The plot revolved around a group of friends being terrorized by a hook-wielding antagonist after they hit him with their car and attempted to hide evidence of the misdeed. This terrifying tale was penned by Scream writer Kevin Williamson and was an adaptation of the 1973 novel of the same name by author Lois Duncan.

Brandy, who starred in the first two movies, mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter last year that she hadn’t been approached by the new movie’s team, but would relish the opportunity to participate.

At the time of the interview, Brandy said, “I need them to give me a call because I survived in that movie! I came out in the end, bloodied up, ready to go.”

I’m curious to see how they continue the story after all these years. Hoping it captures some of the original’s suspense.
