Safdie, who previously appeared in Nolan’s Oppenheimer, will join an impressive cast that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. The film, which is an adaptation of the Greek epic poem by Homer, promises to be a mythic action epic shot using brand new Imax film technology. Actor-director Benny Safdie will be teaming up with Christopher Nolan once again for the renowned filmmaker’s latest project, The Odyssey. Safdie, known for his role as physicist Edward Teller in Nolan’s Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer, has joined a star-studded cast featuring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.

The upcoming film is an adaptation of the Greek epic poem by Homer. Universal Pictures, who announced the project in December, described it as a “mythic action epic” that will be shot using groundbreaking Imax film technology, bringing Homer’s legendary saga to Imax screens for the first time. The highly anticipated film is set to hit theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.

Taking inspiration from the ancient Greek tale, The Odyssey follows the arduous journey of Greek hero King Odysseus as he tries to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Along the way, Odysseus faces numerous obstacles and encounters divine interventions from the gods, not to mention a few encounters with Cyclopes. The story also delves into the struggles of Odysseus’s wife and son, who must confront ambitious suitors vying for the throne.

While details about character descriptions and roles remain undisclosed, fans eagerly await further updates from Universal Pictures regarding the casting choices for this exciting project.

Production is scheduled to commence in late February, signaling the start of an epic cinematic adventure. Prior to this collaboration, Safdie most recently captivated audiences in the Showtime/A24 series The Curse, which he co-wrote and co-created with Nathan Fielder. His exceptional performance in the series earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination, along with a WGA Award nomination for his outstanding writing.

Safdie has also recently wrapped up filming in Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore 2. Additionally, audiences can look forward to his directorial debut, The Smashing Machine, set to be released by A24 later this year. The biopic, featuring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, portrays the life of MMA fighter Mark Kerr.

Although Safdie initially gained recognition for his directing work alongside his brother Josh, he has steadily built an impressive acting resume. His notable acting credits include Lionsgate’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Claire Denis’ Palme d’Or-nominated film The Stars at Noon, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s critically acclaimed Licorice Pizza.
