Out Of The Garbage And Into Your Heart… Again!
THE GARBAGE PAILS KIDS came “out of the garbage and into your heart” back in 1987, and then straight back into the garbage, unfortunately. While some, like me, appreciated the odd film as a cinematic masterpiece on a level all its own (I proudly have the poster hanging on my wall) — the rest of the world was ready to close the lid on the Topps cards inspired creations. That is, until now… and Micheal Eisner of all people.
According to Deadline, “Michael EisnerĂ¢â‚¬â„¢s The Tornante Company will finance and produce the development of a feature film based on Garbage Pail Kids, the trading card line published by Topps. Eisner bought the card company in 2007 and this is his first feature spinoff project. Toby Ascher is producing. PES (that is what he goes by) will direct the film, which will be scripted by Michael Vukadinovich, who most recently set his Black List script The Three Misfortunes Of Geppetto at Fox and Shawn LevyĂ¢â‚¬â„¢s 21 Laps. PES, an award winning creator of shorts, developed the story with Vukadinovich. His latest film is Fresh Guacamole, and his other shorts include Roof Sex and Western Spaghetti. All of them have been wildly popular viral videos.”
I personally think a film directed by a man who calls himself “PES” is a lot more laughable than the 1987 “live action heap of fun” that people seem to love to mock. Regardless, the GPK’s are a property that may lend itself well to remake-ville. Let’s wait and see what PES has in store…
