They Live, Halloween, Independence Movie Review – An EntertainmentGeekly RETRO Podcast

LA Times Hero Complex Film FestivalThanks to the lovely folks at Los Angeles Times Hero Complex, we were able to see some flicks that we consider classics: a John Carpenter double feature THEY LIVE and HALLOWEEN, and Roland Emmerich’s alien invasion blockbuster INDEPENDENCE DAY. A wonderful experience with interesting Q&As with both Carpenter and Emmerich, but it helps set perspective as to the types of movies made in a different era.  WHAT do we mean? Give a listen!

Iron Man 3 Movie Review – An EntertainmentGeekly Podcast

Iron Man 3The man of iron has returned, and so has Robert Downey Jr. We’re talking about Shane Black, the director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the writer of The Long Kiss Goodnight, the actor in Predator who tells a story about a vagina that’s as big as a house. Honestly, neither of us were huge Iron Man fans but we were excited to see where Black took us now that Favreau was moving onward. And what did we find???  Our latest Iron Man 3 movie review podcast will fill you in.

Pain & Gain Movie Review – An EntertainmentGeekly Podcast

Pain & Gain Despised this movie. Not going to write too much about it, but if you want to hear about it, we rant and rave for far too long about what this was supposed to be, why it failed, why Dwayne The Rock Johnson should be embarrassed, why Michael Bay’s sense of humor sucks…. on and on and on. Ya know, angry annoyed kids stuff.

Oblivion Movie Review – An EntertainmentGeekly Podcast

oblivion-poster-tom-cruise2People always lament that there isn’t any good sci fi out there, but OBLIVION tries to change that up. The director of EG favorite TRON LEGACY returns with his post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure, OBLIVION, and brings the legendary Tom Cruise along for the ride. We’ll cut to the chase, our views were mixed on this one, though the long story short: it’s not a bad movie. Why? You’ll have to hear our ravings and rantings to know for sure.

Highlights include:

  • Can derivative sci-fi still be good sci fi?
  • Joseph Kosinski – does he improve upon TRON LEGACY?
  • Tom Cruise – the last great movie star?
  • Morgan Freeman – is he paid by the second?

Be warned, there are some spoilers because to go deep into the movie, we had to discuss some of them. But please, share your thoughts and give a listen to our OBLIVION movie review podcast:

Jurassic Park 3D Movie Review – An EntertainmentGeekly Podcast

jurassic-park-3d-posterWho doesn’t love dinosaurs? Much more, who doesn’t love dinosaurs in 3D??? As one of our favorite films, we had to return to Isla Nublar to see JURASSIC PARK 3D in theaters one more time… or in Cybergosh’s case, two more times. The AMC Citiwalk’s IMAX 3D was the venue, and this edition was spread over two different journeys. The first Cybergosh hit Universal Studios Hollywood to live the ride on the same day he saw the movie with special guests, and then Eros and Cybergosh caught another screening after Oblivion (podcast to come!). What did we think? I think you already know but…

Highlights include:

  • The 3D. The sound. The spectacle of IMAX. Is the new re-issue worth it?
  • Why is it that CG from 20 years ago works better than the CG of today sometimes?
  • What we want from a Jurassic Park 4

So be a clever girl, and dive right in to our JURASSIC PARK 3D movie review podcast:

Evil Dead Movie Review – An EntertainmentGeekly Podcast

Evil DeadAs big fans of Sam Raimi and the original Evil Dead saga, we were pumped to see the remake which we had read was getting good press from the horror community. We even convinced the legendary BAKE SNAKER to join us as a special guest as we toured a different kind of cabin in the woods. When all was over, we were a group divided – some of us hated it, one of us liked — how could this be?

Highlights include:

  • Looking back at the original Evil Dead. Do people keep confusing Evil Dead for Evil Dead 2?
  • Gore hounding. Was it shocking, was it tame, was it necessary?
  • From backwoods indie to Hollywood style – did we like the look of the new Evil Dead?
  • A key story change that makes the straightforward tale even better
  • What the heck did that thing after the credits have anything to do with the movie, other than pandering to its fanbase???

So get ready to swallow your soul and dive in to our EVIL DEAD movie review podcast:

G.I. Joe Retaliation Movie Review – An EntertainmentGeekly Podcast

GI Joe Retaliation - International PosterSo many forces have come together for G.I. Joe Retaliation: the director of Fast Five, one of our favorite action/driving movies of all time, the mega-star and Scorpion King himself, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the comic and animated might of a childhood favorite, G.I. Joe. We didn’t hate the first movie, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and in fact, we liked the characters, for the most part and were able to turn a blind eye to the super mech jumping suits. I mean, the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow back story was fantastically done!  We had fun with the flawed first flick, but now the second time is go and we…were… well, we’ll let the podcast speak for itself. But it ain’t pretty.

Highlights include:

  • The high profile delay – did they go back and shoot more Channing or no?
  • The reuniting of Arnold Vosloo and The Rock since their Mummy Returns days
  • Bruce Willis… and what happened?

One update: Eros was totally wrong on the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow history (it’s presented in the Marvel Comics similarly, so what they do in the movie works), but still stands by his Firefly is totally lame comment.

UPDATE: More embarrassing, we totally thought it was the same director as Fast Five and the upcoming Fast and Furious 6, Justin Lin. We apologize for the error, sometimes we make mistakes… or wish for better things.

For now, enlist in our GI JOE RETALIATION movie review podcast:

You know the classic story of the Wizard of Oz, but here you find out what happened before Dorothy left Kansas. Expectations were low, as we are not Alice fans, but did the magic of James Franco and company enchant regardless?

  • The pre-show entertainment, and what’s with telling us about a movie we’re about to see ourselves??
  • Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz — who wins, who loses and who do we just love to see in the movies?

A Good Day To Die Hard Movie Review – An EntertainmentGeekly Podcast

A Good Day To Die HardWow. Usually, we do our best to mask our final opinions before you give the podcast a listen, but in the case of A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD, we’ve got to cut to the chase. Don’t see it. Don’t buy a ticket to see it. Don’t add it to your Netflix queue as an upcoming DVD rental. Don’t put the keyword into your DVR for when it runs on F/X in a Die Hard marathon. Trust us, if you have any love for Die Hard and Bruce Willis’ John McClane, just pretend this movie doesn’t exist and go on with your life. Rent one of Willis’ direct-to-DVD stinkers if you need your fix, but stay away from this one!

Special friends of EG, Josh & Tess, help lend their wit as we all try to make sense of the nonsense we just witnessed. And for deeper deconstruction, highlights (?) include:

  • Why no one told Bruce Willis that he was in a Die Hard movie
  • Why there isn’t a single likeable, interesting character in the entire film
  • Why John Moore, the director of Max Payne, was a lousy choice
  • Other insane oddities that drove us to madness

Of course, maybe we’re just bitter jaded die-hard DIE HARD fans, so let us know what you think when you see it. Sure we’ll be upset that you defied our explicit wishes to avoid this movie at all costs, but we’ll always love you. For now, enjoy our A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD movie review podcast:

Warm Bodies Movie Review – An Entertainment Geekly Podcast

Warm BodiesWe didn’t really know what to expect from WARM BODIES. A romantic comedy with zombies with John Malkovich, really? All we knew was very little of the premise, but it was enough to get us into theaters to see it. What did we think? Could WARM BODIES be the first solid offering of 2013?? All these questions and more are answered in this special EG podcast that explores the deepest depths of our cold, dark hearts…

Highlights include:

  • The inevitable Zombieland comparison
  • Zombie love stories. How can this possibly work?
  • John Malkovich – is he the new Ben Kingsley?
  • What’s with Teresa Palmer, and is she the poor woman’s Kristen Stewart (or is Kristen Stewart the poor woman’s Teresa Palmer?)

Let us know what YOU think, and if you see the movie, share your thoughts as well.

In the meantime, enjoy our WARM BODIES movie review podcast:

Bullet To The Head Movie Review – An Entertainment Geekly Podcast

Bullet To The HeadSylvester Stallone has always been one of the greats. Sure, he may have stumbled here and there when he asked people to stop or his mom would shoot, but for every Judge Dredd, we got a Demolition Man. Recently, there’s been a Stallone resurgence. Rambo ROCKED, and even if Expendables didn’t live up to its hype, it still was great to see action movies like that made again. So now Stallone returns to the vengeance thriller, backed by veteran director Walter Hill, for BULLET TO THE HEAD, now in theaters.  Cybergosh and I saw the film last week, and took way too long to upload this podcast, but in an EG first, we disagreed on the end result!  Who liked it, who didn’t??  Tune in to see.

Highlights include:

  • Inevitable comparison to Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand
  • The triumphant return of Christian Slater
  • Bonus commentary on J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII directing announcement
  • A special shout out to Movie 43

Let us know what YOU think, and if you see the movie, share your thoughts as well.

The Last Stand Movie Review – An Entertainment Geekly Podcast

The Last StandAs kids, Arnold Schwarzenegger was our hero, our aspirational role-model, our friend. He fought aliens, terrorists and exterminated humanity for our pleasure. So when “he’s back” in a new action movie, we of course needed to be there. That triumphant return is in the movie, THE LAST STAND, now in theaters, and stars Arnie as a local sheriff who has to fight off a bunch of thugs. As always, we give a little taste of our initial reactions post-movie with a special bonus at the end for movie-goers looking for something different.

Highlights include:

  • Arnold quotes galore, and why we still want Schwarzenegger movies
  • Constant unnecessary JACK REACHER needling
  • The curse of Peter Stormare
  • A special shout out to MAMA – a horror movie out this weekend as well worth seeing, in one man’s opinion.

As always, let us know what YOU think and if you see the movie, share your thoughts as well.

Until then, enjoy THE LAST STAND movie review podcast:

Gangster Squad Movie Review – An Entertainment Geekly Podcast

gangstersquadNow that 2013 has begun, we’re kicking things off with a new podcast, with our take on Gangster Squad, the flick that stars Ryan Gosling doing a really weird characterization of a 1940s cop that’s sheep in wolf’s clothing. We share our thoughts on the movie, avoiding spoilers as much as possible, in 20 minutes or less (which is 10 mins less than Fleischer’s last film).

And for those looking for highlights:

  • Breaking down director Ruben Fleischer’s career from Zombieland to 30 Minutes or Less to Gangster Squad
  • Observations on Nick Nolte, and our wishes for him to return for YET ANOTHER 48 HOURS
  • Critiquing and defending Emma Stone

Let us know what you think or what we can do to improve!

willowlogo

FORGET ALL YOU KNOW about diminutive heroes and their calls to adventure leading them There and Back Again! OR THINK YOU KNOW. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Movie Review – An Entertainment Geekly Podcast

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

We saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (most of it, at least), and decided that Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-Earth had to be the start of a new podcast series we’re starting. We discuss the movie we saw, our general thoughts and nerd nitpickyisms, as well as being happy to simply be back in The Shire. There are spoilers, though not many, but we hope you get a kick out of it. And if not, it was good to rant for 20 minutes post-movie.

And for those looking for highlights:

  • Thoughts on book adapting vs. movie making
  • Characters, new and old returning
  • And a major IMAX technical problem is discovered!

Let us know what you think or what we can do to improve!

And now… The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey movie review podcast:

UPDATE from Cybergosh: Apologies for my lack of knowledge on the Mines of Moria and getting my facts wrong, after seeing it again I realized I was way off on that. It should also be noted that the 48 FPS HFR3D, in my opinion, is the biggest mistake in the history of cinema. An uncinematic disaster. It’s laughable.
