Star Wars TV Series Revealed!

Despite the bad news surrounding the DVD’s, we have a dose of good news this afternoon. Seems Lucas has abandoned the Bounty Hunters theme for the forthcoming live-action TV series and instead opted to center the show around the mysterious Baron Papanoida, briefly seen in Episode III.

Star Wars DVDs not remastered

Face it – you’re buying them anyway, but looks like the new Star Wars “original” trilogy being released by Lucasfilm is NOT going to be remastered. Basically it’s a transfer from the “definitive collection” laserdisc masters (which by the way are the same discs I was making my personal DVD transfers from, lol), with 2-channel stereo sound.

The sound factor does not bother me, but the lack of it being anamorphic is hideous. (it WILL be letterboxed however.)

Most likely this is Lucas begrudgingly allowing these versions of the films to be released, as nothing more than extensive bonus material rather than a full-out, remastered version. I detect some spite in this, as if to say, “You want the shitty version? Have your shitty version…” Clearly he wants the special edition trilogies to be the only ones that fans can enjoy in the best quality possible.

Whatever. Lots of fans are popping stitches over this, forgetting that mere days ago they didn’t have a theatrical version to bitch about at all. So I’ll take what I can get, bend over, and say please may I have another.

Artwork for DVD Release

Kinda disappointing it’s not the actual classic posters (fans with photoshop could make more interesting images). Re-creating them in this shitty, glossy style is a sucky idea. Hate that the Vader shown on Episode V is actually from Revenge of the Sith press materials, but whatever. –slusssh—

We take what we can get…

…All I Got Was This Lousy Pic

eric_small.jpgSo the full E3 report is coming, with some special stories and my top picks from the biggest video game show on Earth. In the meantime, however, allow me to share a unique moment as I pose with one of the creepy Graumann’s Chinese Theater “actors.” This pic was taken right before this thing muttered under its dwarven breath, “I work for tips… I WORK FOR TIPS!!!”

TARZAN swings (AND FALLS) on BROADWAY!

Saw this mess of a show on its FIRST PREVIEW night back in March. Give them a little slack for the early bumpy problems, but what a tragedy! Should close on principle alone, but slowing ticket sales will surely do it first!! More reviews follow:

Must Love Jaws

Recommended by Snake Baker – almost as good as Shining and Brokeback to the Future. Only reason it’s not as good in my book — is that it breaks the trailer rules and shows things that normally would never be seen in a real trailer (even though still very funny). One of the best edits of its kind…

Indy IV to have less action??

Crazy old Lucas was cornered at a recent dinner and gave up a few slim details on the next Indy, the most surprising of which is the downplay of the action sequences in the new flick. “I think Tom Cruise proved that people are getting bored with that kind of stuff. What they want to see is something different. And Indiana Jones, if nothing else, is always different.”

Before being swept away, Lucas also revealed that he finished the script and hopes to start filming next Summer.

Hollywood’s new reality amid special effects boom

Friday, May 12, 2006

By Merissa Marr and Kate Kelly, The Wall Street Journal

Growing up in the Chicago suburbs in the early 1990s, Greg and Colin
Strause were the ultimate computer geeks. While other teenagers played
sports or flirted with girls, the Strause brothers huddled over a
computer in their father’s basement creating movie-style special effects.

Now, thanks to Hollywood’s obsession with expensive computer-generated
tricks, the Strause brothers have hit the big time. Having worked on
“Titanic,” “The Day After Tomorrow” and this summer’s “X-Men: The Last
Stand,” the brothers can afford to live in luxury condos in Marina del
Rey, overlooking the ocean.

“We used to get flack for being nerds,” says Colin. “Now we’re nerds
with Ferraris and Bentleys.”

New Cars Trailer

I’ve had faith in this film ever since the first glimpse back in November 2004. I knew, even before Lasseter assumed the role of the new Walt that he would never steer this six-years-in-the-making passion project off course. Finally, here we get a closer glimpse to back that up. Seriously…with this and Pirates I could not be more happy it’s summer.

Check out the new trailer Here.
