Cradle of Love – Ford Fairlane Music Video

Share

A music video tribute to the classic Andrew Dice Clay movie, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, set to Billy Idol’s “Cradle of Love.” Yes, the MTV music video for Cradle of Love is hot, but I find this one a lot more fun. Courtesy of our old pal, Junky — give us the low-down, boy, if you’re not robbing the Cradle of Love, that is…

Should point out something interesting about these videos that may not be obvious.

Due to the nature of deck-to-deck VHS editing, once you make an edit you CANNOT GO BACK.  So you need not to make mistakes, or live with the ones that slip through.  In this video there is a glitch in the shot with the bathroom mirror that I apparently let slip through.

Anyway, this is one of my favorite videos because I honestly think there are a lot of amazing rhythmic cuts, especially within the explosions.

I never saw this movie in the theatre (like most people), but I did have a passing fancy with it when I encountered it on home video.  Sure, it’s popcorn violence, bubble gum sex and andrew dice clay, but it has a VERY weird charm about it that works for some reason.  It’s tongue-in-cheek, highly stylized, and actually managed to try and put a context on the Dice Clay persona of the time.  Honestly, it’s better than a lot of movies in its genre.

Anyway, I loved the song and made this one of my first laserdisc-to-VHS editing experiments.  Thanks once again to Freshmen roommie Cybergosh, and his amazing equipment.  For a guy who was always so obsessed about who played with his toys, looking back he was always really generous to let me edit on his equipment.

Cuz this took quite a long time to finish, as you could imagine.  Still proud of this video, it was the first of my little movie music videos and in some ways is probably the tightest and best cutting of them all.

    Enjoy!

Oh totally- it is the best.  It’s a mini masterpiece considering the way it was pieced together.

plus, for me, it’s the little thngs…

    the hitchhiking thumbs,

the billy idol extended scream on the extended explosion shot

even the gentle lowering of the barrel of the gun…

    all fit the music perfectly.

i got chills watching this and will whip out this dvd tonight and revisit one of my favorite films of all time.  Renny Harlin’s best film.

i only wish he didn’t become such a pud.  he spends half the commentary talking about the violence and how he would do half the movie different if he made it today.

I remember going over to your guys dorm room for the first time…we watched this video, and the back to the future sequel video, and nothing but trouble…i was blown away. For anyone who has ever edited VHS to VHS, the Hayden Hall catalogue is most impressive.

ps – any chance of a certain mcdonalds commercial ever airing?

  4. WarrenTApe says:

ps. I just want to clarify i was blown away by your VIDEO for nothing but trouble and DEFINITELY NOT nothing but trouble itself.

hahaha —I have the McDonalds commercials, I have a feeling they will never see the light of day, unless someone gives their blessing.  So fuckin’ brilliant.
